Red Cross Responds to Four-Alarm Fire that Left 100 Homeless
Red Cross volunteers responded to the scene as flames erupted at 88 Pearl Street in Manchester around 8 p.m. Tuesday night. Residents of 38 housing units were affected and nearly 100 people were left homeless because of the swift-moving fire. Most residents escaped with only the clothes on their backs.
A shelter was set up at St. Joseph's Regional Junior High School for those left homeless by the devastaing fire. Survivors were able to get out of the rain and spend the night in the shelter. Wednesday morning 25 COAD partners (Community Organizations Active in Disaster) enthusiastically joined the American Red Cross to provide comprehensive services to the clients: including housing, landlord referrals, clothing, appliances, food, transportation, replacement of medication and medical supplies.
A huge thank you to the dedicated volunteers who served night and day to ensure the clients were cared for. We couldn't deliver these quality services as efficiently without our volunteers who give so generously of their time and energy, we are deeply grateful for all they do!

A very special thank you to Welfare Commisioner Paul Martineau for the generous gift of $20,000 to help the Greater Manchester Red Cross provide first month's rent for the fire survivors. Thank you also to Mayor Guinta for the authorization of the funding. We are deeply touched and appreciative of their generosity and incredible support of the American Red Cross and the Greater Manchester community.
Many thanks to our COAD partners who generously supported the Red Cross efforts to aid the Pearl St. Fire survivors. The community organizations who have given so much have set a true standard in disaster response and recovery. As a COAD, standing side by side, together as a community, we will continue to provide unparrallelled disaster recovery service.
